T20 World Cup: England halts New Zealand’s winning streak, hopes of semi-finals intact

,

Brisbane: Fifties from Jos Buttler (73) and Alex Hales (52) kept England’s semi-final hopes alive as they beat New Zealand by 21 runs in the T20 World Cup Super 12 on Tuesday. In the Group One match, England, batting first, scored 179 runs in the stipulated 20 overs, in response to which New Zealand could only score 159 runs.

Glenn Phillips scored a half-century to take New Zealand to the target, but there was no support. Phillips scored 62 runs in 36 balls with the help of four fours and three sixes and the hopes of the Kiwi team ended when they were dismissed in the 18th over.

England are second in their group with five points from four matches. Australia (-0.30) also have five points from four matches, but are in third place due to a poor run rate. Top-ranked New Zealand (2.23) had a chance to win the match with five points and a place in the semi-finals, but the defeat put their run-rates within the reach of England and Australia. All the three teams are yet to play a single Super 12 match.

Earlier, Captain Butler won the toss and elected to bat and along with Hales got England off to a great start. Butler and Hales added 81 runs in 10 overs to put England in a strong position for the first wicket. Hales scored 52 runs in 40 balls with the help of seven fours and a six. After the fall of his wicket, Buttler also opened his hands and completed his half-century, scoring 73 runs in 47 balls with the help of seven fours and two sixes.

England scored 148 runs in 17 overs for the loss of two wickets but New Zealand took four wickets in the last three overs to curb the run rate. Lockie Ferguson dismissed Liam Livingston (20) and Ben Stokes (08), while Tim Southee dismissed Harry Brooke for seven. Sam Kern hit a six in the last over to take his team to 179/6.
