Nashik: Keeping in view the growing population of the city, the discussion regarding the Kukvi Dam has started so that there is no shortage of water in the future. The Chief Minister has assured to arrange Rs 50 crore, but earlier the Tantric Advisory Committee has informed the Forest Department to pay Rs 36.57 crore as in-place compensation. Keeping in view the drinking water requirement of Nashik city, a dam is proposed at Brahmanwada complex in Trimbakeshwar tehsil. The capacity of this dam will be one and a half million cubic feet. The state government had given administrative permission on 26 August 2009 for an expenditure of Rs.283 crore. Subsequently, on 4 December 2012, the North Maharashtra office of the Irrigation Department has approved the proposal. But after that, due to the change in the state government’s policy, the construction of the dam could not be started. Gangapur Dam water is reserved for agriculture. So 1.5 TMC water is saved from Makne dam. So there are many problems in taking safe water from Darna Dam. Hence Kikvi Dam is essential to supply water to Nashik city till 2041.

36 crores will have to be given to the forest department.

The state government has included Kikwe Dam in the White Book of the 2022 and 2023 fiscal budget. 50 crore has been provided for the dam. The improved project report of Kikwi Dam has been prepared as per the rate list 2021 and 2022, which has been submitted to the Tantric Advisory Committee of the State Government in January 2022. The Tantric Advisory Committee has informed the Forest Department to collect Rs 36.57 crore before starting the construction of the dam. Along with this, the Godavari Marathwada Vikas Mahamandal has also written to the government to provide funds to the forest department to pay the amount. The government has not taken any decision yet.

Shouldn’t Kukvi Dam be just a show?

Godavari Irrigation Development Corporation has not worked even after the notification of giving Rs 36 crore to the forest department. In such a situation, after meeting with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, MP Hemant Godse has assured to arrange 50 crore rupees in the financial budget. This assurance is positive from a development perspective, but there are technical issues ahead. Who will pay 36 crore rupees to the forest department? What if the Municipal Corporation has to pay this amount? Where will she bring sustenance? Many such questions are being raised. After all, shouldn’t Kikwe Dam be just a show? This is what citizens expect.
