The European VAT system is facing change. At the end of 2022, the European Commission (EC) published its VAT in the Digital Age (ViDA) proposal, which aims to modernize the VAT system and address the VAT problems caused by the growth of the platform economy.
But while this directive, which includes the transition to real-time digital reporting based on e-invoicing for organizations operating across borders, will apply to all countries within the EU, the decision on how to implement it will be left to individual jurisdictions.
This presents numerous challenges for companies that have to deal with the technical aspect: How can they modernize to meet these new technical requirements? What advantages and opportunities arise from harmonized, cross-border electronic invoicing? And how can interoperability and compliance be ensured when one has to take into account both domestic and cross-border information exchange as well as local and European tax regulations?
