167 candidates face criminal cases in first phase of Gujarat polls: ADR

Ahmedabad: A total of 167 candidates contesting the first phase of the upcoming Gujarat Assembly elections are facing criminal cases, a figure shows.

“In the first phase, 167 candidates have declared that they are facing criminal cases. This is 13 percent of the total candidates but higher than the number in 2017 when 78 candidates disclosed that they were facing criminal cases. are,” said Major General (retd.) Anil Verma, head of the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

ADR and Gujarat Election Watch have scanned the details of candidates contesting the Gujarat Assembly elections, finding that out of 799 candidates (in the first phase), 167 are facing criminal cases.

Verma said the Aam Aadmi Party, which claims to be the most honest and transparent, has fielded 30 per cent candidates facing serious criminal cases, the BJP (12 per cent), the Congress (20 per cent). and BTP (7 percent), Verma said.

The Gujarat Assembly elections will be held in two phases – December 1 and December 5.

Counting of votes will take place on December 8.
