Need for UNSC reforms cannot always be denied: Jaishankar

,

The need to reform the UN Security Council cannot be denied forever, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said even as he said India never believed it would be an easy process.

Currently, the UNSC has five permanent members – China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States. India is among the ten non-permanent members of the body. Only a permanent member has the power to veto any substantive resolution.

India has been at the forefront of efforts to reform the Security Council over the years, arguing that it deserves a seat as a permanent member.

“We have, we never thought it was an easy process. But we understand that the need for reforms cannot be denied forever,” Jaishankar told a group of Indian journalists here on Wednesday. .

He was responding to a question regarding the seriousness of the US on Security Council reforms.

“It is my understanding that the position that President (Joe) Biden presented is the clearest and most specific statement of American support for reform of the United Nations, including the Security Council.”

“So, I don’t think it’s a repeat of anything, I don’t think in that sense, it’s business as usual. Now, how it goes, where it goes, I think, is up to all of us. : Members of the United Nations, and where do we take it,” he said.

“It’s not the responsibility of any one country, no matter how powerful. I think it’s a collective effort that the members of the United Nations have to make. We’re pushing for reform efforts, including through the IGN. And you also know where the hesitation comes from and let’s focus on that,” Jaishankar said.

Asserting that India is ready to take on greater responsibilities, Jaishankar said on Saturday that talks on much-needed reforms at the UN Security Council should not be hampered by procedural maneuvers and Sayers cannot hold this process “hostage forever.” India, currently a non-permanent member of the 15-nation UN Security Council, will complete its two-year term in December this year when it chairs the council.

India is ready to take on big responsibilities. But it at the same time seeks to ensure that the injustices facing the Global South are decisively addressed,” Jaishankar said in his address to the UN General Assembly’s high-level general debate.

“During our tenure, we have bridged some of the most serious but divisive issues facing the Council. We have also focused on concerns such as maritime security, peacekeeping and counter-terrorism.”

Jaishankar and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres discussed the situation in Ukraine and Myanmar along with reforms in the Security Council during their meeting in New York.

Jaishankar met Guterres here on Saturday after addressing the high-level UN General Assembly.

“A wide-ranging discussion on pressing global challenges with UN Secretary-General @antonioguterres. Agenda included Ukraine conflict, UN reform, G20, climate action, food security and data for development,” Jaishankar tweeted.
