Mastercard today announced that Jon Huntsman will serve as vice chairman and president of strategic growth, effective April 15. The former U.S. Ambassador and Governor will lead efforts focused on expanding commercial partnerships with governments and public sector institutions while advancing the company’s inclusive growth, philanthropy and sustainability agenda.

He will report to Michael Miebach, Chief Executive Officer of Mastercard, and be part of the Executive Leadership Team.

“Jon’s unique experience across four decades in the public and private sectors will be extremely valuable to us as we build Mastercard’s future,” said Miebach. “He will play a critical role in driving our approach to commercial sustainability through social impact, in line with our company’s core value of doing well by doing good.”

Jon served as U.S. ambassador to Singapore, China and Russia under both Republican and Democratic administrations. He is the only American to have served as chief of mission in both China and Russia. In a variety of trade policy roles, including as Deputy U.S. Trade Representative, Jon negotiated dozens of trade and investment agreements across Asia and Africa. Jon was also twice elected governor of Utah, where he served as chairman of the Western Governors Association.

Jon previously served as an executive at Huntsman Corporation and most recently as vice chairman of Ford Motor Company, where he currently serves on the board of directors. He is also a member of Chevron’s board of directors. He is a trustee of the Huntsman Foundation, which pioneered the creation of the Huntsman Cancer Institute and the Huntsman Mental Health Institute, both at the University of Utah. Jon is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and the holder of ten honorary doctorates.

“Mastercard has an exceptional culture, driven by a deep commitment to driving inclusive, sustainable and digitally-led economic growth around the world,” said Jon. “I am very excited to be part of this great team to further expand new business opportunities and partnerships and support the company’s exciting strategic growth opportunities.”

Mastercard Strategic Growth encompasses the company’s philanthropy, ESG, localization and partnership programs. This also includes the Center for Inclusive Growth, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary. The Center promotes equitable and sustainable economic growth and financial inclusion around the world and manages the philanthropic Mastercard Impact Fund to produce independent research, scalable global programs and a strong community of thinkers, leaders and doers on the front lines of inclusive growth.
