Brampton moves to ban personal fireworks after ‘significant growth’ in safety, noise complaints

The City of Brampton is moving to ban the use of personal fireworks on holidays after a “significant increase” in complaints related to safety, noise and debris.

Short-range fireworks are currently permitted on private property on Victoria Day, Canada Day, Diwali and New Year.

The City of Brampton is moving to ban the use of personal fireworks on holidays after a “significant increase” in complaints related to safety, noise and debris.

A motion to immediately ban the use and sale of fireworks in Brampton has been approved by city council of councilors, but needs to be ratified by city council at a meeting on Monday.

Mayor Patrick Brown says residents should be able to enjoy the holidays safely without disruption, excessive noise or debris.

Short-range fireworks are currently allowed on private property in Brampton without the need for a permit on Victoria Day, Canada Day, Diwali and New Year’s Eve.

Brampton says if the new motion is approved, it would add an annual fireworks display to the city’s Diwali celebration, similar to Canada Day and New Year’s Eve in 2023.

Environment Canada warned last month that “high levels of air pollution” were expected in Toronto and surrounding areas due to fireworks expected for Diwali, raising questions about why the major Hindu holiday. The agency later updated its statement to mention Diwali
