Ontario invests $550K to help Syncreon quit, Stellentis workers find jobs

,

The Ontario government announced a $550,000 investment Friday to build career centers to help recently laid-off auto workers in Windsor, Ont.

The government is funding a Career Action Center that will serve the 289 recently laid off Syncreon workers and is continuing to fund a similar center affected by the third shift layoffs. Already opened for 530 Stellantis workers.

The new Syncreon Job Center opened earlier this week, and will offer help with finding new jobs, career planning, counseling and resume writing.

A representative of Stellants career site said that they have been able to help around 600 people who have come to them for services.

“It’s very difficult because everyone’s situation is different, like some people lost their jobs, and some people – both worked outside of the family,” Sarah Vermast said.

Before the layoff, Vermast was employed by Stellentis, and now works in a career center supporting his colleagues.

“It’s different and it’s difficult and challenging for them and everybody’s different with their mental health situation and things like that, we do the best we can,” he said.

“This is about workers trying to eliminate opportunities and get back to work,” said Dave Cassidy, president of Unifor Local 444.

Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development Minister Monty McNaughton made the announcement in Windsor, emphasizing the government’s efforts to secure the auto industry in Ontario.

Workers struggle with EI.

In July, Windsor Assembly Plant owner Stellantis announced it would bring work done by feeder plant Syncreon back to the Windsor Assembly Plant.

“As Stilantis evolves into a sustainable, mobility tech company, we continue to evaluate our operations for efficiencies,” a Stilantis spokesperson said at the time.

In September, the City Council voted to lobby the federal government on behalf of Syncreon workers, citing concerns that they may not receive their full EI entitlement.

Council voted unanimously to press Ottawa to extend the temporary COVID-era EI changes that are set to expire on September 24. Without the expansion, Syncreon’s 297 local workers would see their EI benefits cut, and some may not qualify for EI at all. .

His employment ended on October 31.

Cassidy says he is working closely with local MP Irek Kusmierczyk.

“It’s a very complex file, but we’ll continue to push for it,” he said, adding that Unifor has listed the issue as a top priority because of the COVID-related changes to EI. Happening across Canada.

“I think [Syncreon] Really brought it up.”

The Syncreon Job Center will be located at 3400 Somme Ave in Windsor by October 2023. Funding will be provided. The Stellantis Job Center at 1855 Turner Road will remain open until November 2023.

The government says there are currently 13,000 open jobs in the Windsor-Sarnia region.
