More than 200 cooperative banks and regional rural banks were briefly cut off from India’s retail payments system by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) last week amid fears that C-Edge Technologies was hit by a ransomware attack.

In a statement, NPCI said core banking provider C-Edge’s systems were “potentially” affected by a ransomware attack.
“To prevent a major impact on the payments ecosystem, NPCI has temporarily isolated C-Edge Technologies from access to the retail payment systems operated by NPCI. Customers of banks served by C-Edge will not have access to payment systems during the isolation period.” “
Connectivity was restored the following day following a review by an independent forensic accounting firm, which determined that the impact was limited to the C-Edge systems hosted in their data center and did not impact any banking infrastructure.
