A patch update has been released, aimed at helping alleviate congestion issues on the Solana network.

“Version v1.17.31 is now recommended for general use by MainnetBeta validators”, Solana status update account job the X early Monday. “This release contains improvements that will help alleviate current congestion on the Solana network.”

The patch specifically includes improvements to how data packets are handled and optimized, changes to how certain nodes are ranked based on their stake, and updates to default settings in the local test environment of the system.

Version v1.17.31 represents the first round Mainnet congestion updates, with more to come. Anatoly Yakovenko, co-founder of Solana said It typically takes about 30 incremental updates, or patch releases, to develop and finalize a major software release.

The Solana validator client team, Anza confirmed further improvements will then follow in v1.18. Friday, Anza released proposed congestion fixes in v1.18.11 on devnet and asked testnet validators to implement and help analyze its effectiveness.

Update 1.18, due this month, will make transaction scheduling more deterministic, with the goal of streamlining processing and reducing bottlenecks.

Solana’s congestion problems

The Solana network has been plagued with persistent congestion issues in recent weeks, leading to notable delays in transaction processing and the abandonment of a large number of transactions, with developers scrambling to develop solutions, including patches software and updates.

The congestion affecting the network is largely due to an influx of spam transactions, as bots attempt to prioritize their activities over those of regular users. This problem is exacerbated by a dramatic increase in transactions associated with newly released memecoins, creating extraordinary demand for the network’s block space and preventing access to many users.

The issues may also have been affected by a new Bitcoin-like mining development taking place with Ore. This causes a high number of transactions as miners submit their puzzle solutions to earn rewards. Yakovenko same suggested the project is expected to be moved to the Solana testnet to help provide a more thorough stress test there as well.
