Afghanistan set Sri Lanka a target of 145 runs to win the World Cup match.

BRISBANE: Sri Lanka spinner Venendu Hasaringa took three wickets as Afghanistan posted 144-8 in their Twenty20 World Cup Group 1 match at the Gabba in Brisbane on Tuesday.

The leg-spinner bowled brilliantly in his four overs, finishing with 3-13 and conceding no boundaries in his spell.

Both sides still have a mathematical chance of making the top two in the group, and therefore the semi-finals, but whoever loses is effectively out of the World Cup.

Captain Muhammad Nabi won the toss and elected to bat, so Afghanistan won the six-over powerplay without losing a wicket.

But on the first ball of the seventh over, Rahmanullah Garbaz was clean bowled by Lahiro Kumara for 28 off 24 balls, which included two huge sixes.

Garbaz’s fellow opener Usman Ghani was about to go ahead when he was caught on the midwicket boundary off Hasranga, taking Afghanistan to 68-2.

Kumara picked up his second score and Sri Lanka’s third when Ibrahim Zadran dismissed Bhanuka Rajapaksa for 22 for 90 after 12.2 overs.

Afghanistan looked like they were going to break out with some big overs, but the Sri Lankan bowlers managed to keep them in check.

Najeeb Zadran finally loses patience and tries to drive Dhananjaya de Silva down the ground, only to find Hasaringa at long-on boundary, with Afghanistan 113-4.

Only way left: West Indies must develop youngsters, says T20 winner Sammy

The Afghans then suffered a cruel blow when Gulbuddin Naib slipped while trying to regain his crease and was run out as he desperately tried to make up his ground.

They tried to push forward but Sri Lanka held their nerve and restricted the Afghans to the final overs.
