While you were sleeping: Kimmich rescues Bayern Munich, Lazio demolish AC Milan, Julianton gives Magpies first-league lead in Carabao Cup
,
Joshua Kimmich scored from 30 yards in the 90th minute to help Bayern Munich salvage a point against Cologne. It was the 10-time defending champion’s first win of 2023.
The win kept Bayern Munich four points clear at the top of the Bundesliga.
Cologne started 2023 with a 7-1 thrashing of Werder Bremen – but Bayern are of a different calibre.
The German champions, chasing a record 11th league title, dominated possession but were far less effective than their opponents who looked to grab the three points thanks to Elise Scherry’s fourth-minute volley at the far post.
“We played in the second half the way we envisioned,” Nagelsmann said of his team’s improvement. “I’m sure if we keep it up we’ll get back to winning ways.”
Lazio beat Milan.
Maurizio Sarri’s side are in third place in Serie A with an emphatic 4-0 win over AC Milan. The defeat extended the defending champions’ winning streak to five games in all competitions.
On target for Lazio were Serge Milenkovic-Civic, Mattia Zaccagni, Luis Alberto and Felipe Anderson.
Milan’s poor run began when they squandered a two-goal lead in a 2-2 draw with Roma. The Rossoneri were then knocked out of Lecce by 10-man Torino before a 2-2 draw in the Italian Cup. Perhaps the most painful defeat came last week when Milan were beaten 3-0 by city rivals Inter Milan in the Italian Super Cup.
Lazio have won three in a row between the league and the Italian Cup.
Newcastle Pipe Southampton
Newcastle scored the winner in the 73rd minute to beat Southampton 1-0 in the first leg of the English League Cup semi-final on Tuesday.
The second leg is next week at St James’ Park in Newcastle, where the team are unbeaten in all competitions this season. Southampton will also need to score against the best defense in English football, with Newcastle now keeping 11 clean sheets in their last 12 games.
Joelinton had a goal disallowed for handball and was also blazed from close range before the Brazilian midfielder eventually gave Newcastle the lead, tapping into an empty net after substitute Alexander Isak converted his own goal. Beat the marker down the right and cut into the area to deliver a cross. .
The hosts ended with 10 men at St Mary’s Stadium after centre-back Duje Ćaleta-Car was shown a second yellow card in the 86th minute.
Both teams are looking to end their long trophy drought. While Southampton’s only piece of major silverware is the 1976 FA Cup, Newcastle have to go back even further to a major domestic trophy – the FA Cup in 1955.
