Kolkata: The threat of adenovirus in West Bengal seems to be increasing alarmingly as four more children admitted to a hospital in Kolkata with symptoms have died in the last six hours, taking the total to nine days. The number of child deaths has reached 40.
By Sunday morning, two children – Atifa Khatun (18 months) and Armaan Ghazi (4 years) were reported dead from BC Roy Children’s Hospital. However, by 4 pm, the same hospital reported the death of four more children, taking the toll for the day to six.
Hospital sources have confirmed these four deaths of children admitted to the hospital between 10.30 am and 4 pm, but their identities have not been disclosed. All the children who died in the last 13 hours were under treatment with typical adenovirus symptoms such as fever, cough and difficulty breathing and showed no signs of recovery as a result of treatment failure.
Already, the state health department has issued an advisory for doctors, especially pediatricians, to take special care of children admitted with flu-like symptoms, especially those two years of age or younger. Because they are most vulnerable to adenovirus infection.
Common symptoms of adenovirus are flu-like, including chills, fever, difficulty breathing, sore throat, pneumonia, and acute bronchitis.
The virus can spread through skin-to-skin contact, through the air through coughs and sneezes, and through the feces of an infected person. So far, there are no approved drugs or specific treatments to treat the virus.
